MUSHISHI-RAINDROPS AND RAINBOWS-EPISODE 7-3 STARS

This is a good episode, ’cause not only are rainbows beautiful to look at, but for the first time, we get to see Ginko just hangin’ out and havin’ fun, instead of playing mushi doctor. Opening scene, we find Ginko using a tree as refuge to dodge the rain. He asks a guy named Koro if he could buy some food from him, since his was destroyed by the rain. Koro tells him that he doesn’t have any, and he’s not a merchant.
Ginko notices that Koro has this huge jar on his back, and asks him about it. So Koro goes into his story about how he’s gonna catch a rainbow and put it in there. He tells of his father who was possessed by the rain, and would chase after it like some kind of maniac. The dad wouldn’t come home for days, and when he was found, he’d be stuck in the mud, or in the middle of a field.
When it didn’t rain, he’d drink water like no tomorrow. Well, I guess it could be worst, he could be an alcoholic bum searching for some whiskey at every opportunity. Anyway, dad tells Koro about the rainbow that he saw, it was so beautiful he had to touch it, which is probably the cause of his rain affliction. Dad eventually became ill, but still tried to chase after the rain every chance he got.
Koro’s mission? To find this beautiful, yet elusive rainbow, put it in a big jar (yeah, right), and bring it home to his dad. Now the one guy under the tree who heard this story thought Koro was nuts, and just walked away when the rain stopped. Ginko on the other hand, became intrigued. He knew that this particular rainbow was caused by mushi, so he agreed to help the guy look for it.
In exchange, Koro will buy Ginko’s food. Hey, I don’t have a problem with that, however Ginko volunteered to help this guy for one year, so what does that mean? If Koro has to buy Ginko’s food until then, that sounds like a pretty good deal. As time goes on, Koro reveals more of himself, and we find out that his dad named him after his favorite rainbow, but was teased mercilessly in his village.
To try to compensate for his lousy name, Koro tried to become the best bridge builder around, since his family specialized in it. Only thing is, no one in his family could design a bridge strong enough to withstand the raging river that is stood over. Since Koro wasn’t talented in that area, he just ran away, but if he brings back a rainbow, who knows?
Next scene, and its hot as hell outside. We find Ginko trying to sell a love potion to some guy. “Ginko, instead of trying to sell it, you really need to use it on yourself, find a woman, and settle down instead of running around with some dude, trying to chase mushi rainbows. Maybe I spoke too soon, ’cause they find the rainbow, and start chasing after it, but then it disappears.
No big deal, they just set up camp, and wait for it to come back. Meanwhile, Koro has a flashback of his dad, apologizing for giving him the name Koro, and gives him another name written down on a piece of paper. “Listen Mister, you can’t just write a name down on a piece of paper and presto, he’s got a new name! This is what you have to do, step one, go down to city hall, or the secretary of state, fill out some forms, and………………
It doesn’t matter, ’cause Koro told his dad that he wasn’t changing his name, so I guess that’s the end of that discussion. Next day, they spot the rainbow, chase after it, and get as close as they possibly can. Koro touches it, and Ginko snatches him away. Gee, I wonder if he’ll be like his father now, chasing after the rain at all costs? Well, I don’t know about that, but he did become the best bridge builder ever, now that little piece of gossip came from Ginko, so you didn’t hear it from me, okay?
