MUSHISHI-EPISODE 3-TENDER HORNS-2 1/2 STARS

mushishi-episode-2-pic-1.jpg

Mushishi is a anime series where you really have to pay attention to what’s going on, or you’re gonna be lost. That means you can’t watch the series if you’re on the phone talking about how your boyfriend/girlfriend dumped you, or sitting there crackin’ stupid jokes with your buddies.

Now this episode opens to a cold and snowy scene, and you can see Ginko all bundled up in his coat, hat, and scarf, relieved to have finally arrived at the village where he’s gonna take care of some mushi. “You know Ginko, I know you like helping people, but you’re gonna have to start charging people for your services. You don’t have to take much money, but face the facts, if you’re gonna do a lot of traveling, you need a car, a horse, a bike, a sled with dogs, or a skateboard, something besides using your own two feet.”

“Just think, you could have an ongoing TV series, but producers don’t want to be bothered with some guy that takes forever to travel from village to village, so that’s something for you to think about.” Okay, so Ginko arrives in the village, and meets the elder and the villagers who are having hearing problems. Ginko takes a look and finds out that mushi are to blame, but with some salt, and hot water, he’s able to restore their hearing. In fact Ginko tells them that if they sprinkle salt in every room, they can chase the mushi out of their homes.  Good job Ginko, but the elder says “our work is not finished yet”, one more job to take care of.

“First of all old lady, what do you mean our work, because as I watch this episode, I didn’t see you do crap. Ginko is the one taking care of business, so its his work, not yours or ours, so I just need to set you straight, before I go on with my review.” The one more thing Ginko has to take care of is Maho, grandson of the elder. He has 4 horns growing out of his head, and through these horns he can hear the sound of far away mushi, but its such a loud sound, that if endured for a long time, the spirit breaks, and the host dies.

As Ginko interviews Maho and the elder, he finds out that Maho’s mother had the same illness, and died, but before she did, she covered Maho ears, now why did she do that? Ginko tries to analyze the situation while sitting on top of a roof (don’t ask me, I don’t know what he was doing up there) when he sees Maho sneak away from the village.

Ginko tracks him to a cave, but there’s also mushi hanging out. They see Ginko, and start hovering around him, I guess they’re lining up to ask him out on a date. Well, mushi invades his body, and now Ginko can’t hear, but when he puts his hands over his ears for a few moments, the mushi squirts out. Ginko tells Maho to do the same thing, and mushi leaks out of his ears too, and the horns fall off. So now we find out what Maho’s mom was trying to do when she covered Maho’s ears.  She wanted him to hear the sounds of the muscles in her wrist the only natural sound left for her after the mushi took over her body.

Hey, I’m gonna try it and see if it works, hold on a second……………Interesting, I don’t hear crap….OH NO! DOES THIS MEAN I’M GONNA DIE? HELP! SOMEONE CALL 911, I don’t hear nothing! What did you say? Stop wiggin’ out, it’s only an anime series, and its not real? Yeah, you’re right, ok, I’m fine again. Well, Ginko solved everyones’ problems, and for payment, he keeps the big horns, and let Maho keep the little ones. “Ginko, didn’t I tell you to collect some damn money so that you can buy yourself a car, or a skateboard? Well, don’t come running to me when you freeze your butt off as you head to the next village!”
